Obituary of Carolyn R. Aungst

HUDSON - Carolyn R. Aungst, 88, of Hudson died peacefully on July 26.   Beloved wife of 58 years of Jim Aungst; loving mother of Holle, Heide Manfredi (Joe), and Grant (Brandy); and proud grandmother of Joseph, Alessandra and Carolina Manfredi; and Abigail and Lillian Aungst.  After her diagnosis with cancer in March, Carolyn fought hard, hoping to live to see her sixth grandchild born in November.  Her sister and brother-in-law, Henrietta and Ed Goetz, and four nieces, also survive.  Born in Lakewood on Dec. 20, 1925 to Oscar and Henrietta Rasmus, Carolyn graduated from Springfield High School and received her bachelor and master degrees in education from Miami University. She taught in Parma schools until marriage and then spent many years substitute teaching in Brecksville and Hudson schools. In 1971, the family moved to Hudson where Carolyn became an active member of the community. Her long running newspaper column, Another Spoke in the Hub, documented community news in The Hudson Hub. She also worked for many years as the Hudson community correspondent for the Akron Beacon Journal.  Carolyn was among the first ambulance drivers for the all-volunteer Hudson EMS. She was an avid reader and volunteered at the Hudson Library. As a passionate knitter, she devoted hours to making baby blankets and hats for Newborns in Need, a service mission through the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson.  She was an active member of many organizations including the Kent and Hudson Garden Clubs; the Hudson Senior Citizens; Woman’s Club of Hudson; and Hudson Antique Club.   A memorial celebration of her life will take place Thursday, July 31 at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church of Hudson, 21 Aurora St., Hudson, OH 44236. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Carolyn’s name to First Presbyterian Church of Hudson or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.
