Obituary of Adele Schroeder
Adele Schroeder (nee Keding) went to her Lord the morning of January 2, 2015 after a three week illness. She joins her husband, Alfred E. Schroeder; her sisters – Margaret Kutzke, Clara Schwan, Elsie Petrushke, Martha Keding, Edna Radmacher, and Frieda Cobb; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Schroeder, and granddaughter, Heather Holmes.
Adele was born on December 15, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of August and Paulina (Sauer) Keding. Her family moved to Gladwin, MI early in 1916 to farm. She grew up there working hard on the farm and making her father proud of her ability to handle a team of horses. She moved to work in Detroit as a young woman and returned to the farm during the depression. She ended her employed work life in 1980 as department manager of small electrical appliances in J. L. Hudson’s after 25 years of employment there.
She was married to Alfred E. Schroeder on June 12, 1937. During their marriage they lived in Detroit, Benton Harbor, and settled in Berkley, MI in May of 1946. Adele lived there until March 2009 when she moved to Twinsburg, OH to be closer to her sons.
Adele is survived by her brother Carl A. Keding, of Libertyville, IL; her son, James A. (Marge) Schroeder of Hudson, Ohio; her daughter, Kathleen A. (Barry) Holmes of Colorado Springs, CO; her son, Charles E. Schroeder, of Vermilion, OH; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Adele will be remembered for her practical wisdom, her quick retorts, her amazing needle craft skills, her cookie baking, and hosting of family gatherings. She helped with craft sales at the Berkley Senior Center into her 80s and pieced and helped with quilting of hundreds of quilts for Lutheran World Relief into her 90s. She was a member of Huntington Woods Lutheran Church since 1947 where through the years she led Sunday school sessions, served at dinners and funerals, and helped with Advent and Lenten soup suppers.
A service, conducted by the Reverend Peter Nickel, will be held on Wednesday, January 7 at 11:00 at the main chapel of Glen Eden Cemetery, 35667 W. Eight Mile Road, Livonia, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be given to Huntington Woods Lutheran Church, 12935 W. 11 Mile Road, Huntington Woods, MI 48070 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
