Obituary of William Edward Jones

  MUNROE FALLS - William Edward Jones, “Dollar Bill,” 72, passed away peacefully at home June 13, 2013 after a courageous, 19-year battle with a rare leukemia during which he never once complained. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Asa and younger brother, Terry. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 48 years, Cynthia (Pinney) Jones. Their union was the unlikely result of a blind date arranged by mutual friends, which she first mistook as a prank. Bill is also survived by his mother, Estella Jones, his adoring daughters, Christine (Michael) Pacyna and Pamela (Bennet) Kim along with his beloved grandchildren, Adelle, Sam and Quincy. He also leaves behind niece, Tiffany Hackett and grandniece, Katlyn Hackett.  Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Bill grew up in Masury, Ohio and lived most of his life in the Stow-Munroe Falls area. Bill’s quiet strength and unassuming courage were apparent even at an early age. When he was just 12 he saved a five year-old from drowning at an area lake.  A natural mathematician, Bill held a B.S. in chemistry from Mount Union and completed postgraduate work at the University of Akron. He was a chemist at PPG then MACTac where he worked for 42 years transitioning from chemist to technical marketing manager of the Technical Products Division. Bill was an active member of the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council trade association for more than 15 years serving as board member, treasurer, vice president and ultimately, president. His hard work carried over into his second full-time job as treasurer of Interactive Therapeutics for 23 years, a publishing company created by his wife and her business partner.  Bill had a lifelong love of sports, a member of his high school basketball and football teams and his college tennis team. As an adult he played golf as long as his body would allow. He was a tireless fan of his Purple Raiders football, The Cavs, The Browns and The Cleveland Indians who he watched up until the day he died. He was equally enthusiastic through both daughters’ softball games, tennis matches, basketball games, track and cross country meets. And never once made them think that throwing or doing anything “like a girl” was second rate.  Bill was a tinkerer with a MacGyver-like ingenuity. He could fix or create just about anything with leftover hardware, adhesives, twist ties, cardboard, and other oddly collected scraps from his workbench. A trait his family both mocked and revered. Perhaps his greatest labor of love was his landscaping, so beautiful it earned him recognition from the city. Bill and his wife, Cindy, enjoyed several recent years as snowbirds, retreating to the Florida panhandle for the winter months. At home, their most memorable adventures can be traced back to their extended family, The Foxes.  Despite being famously frugal, Bill was always generous with friends and family. He will be remembered for everything from his smile and bad jokes to his earth-shaking snore and steady stream of blue shirts. But most of all for being the best friend, husband, father and grandfather anyone could ask for.   All who wish to celebrate his life are invited to a memorial service July 7, 1:00 pm at Silver Lake Country Club.
