Obituary of Richard L. Shellenberger

STOW- Richard L. Shellenberger went home to be with the Lord on October 3, 2012 at the age of 82.  Richard received his undergraduate degree from Earlham College and his Master’s degree from Indiana State University.  After serving in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, he married Kayla Chambers on August 17, 1959 and began his teaching career.  He loved teaching high school students and taught for a total of 52 years, the last 38 at CVCA.  Richard was a seasonal national park ranger in 5 different national parks, including Yellowstone.   He also loved playing chess, which he did up until a week before he died, and had organized the Akron Chess League for high school students.  Mr. Shellenberger also refereed girls volleyball throughout the Ohio area.  A longtime member of The Chapel, he  taught an adult Sunday school class for many years. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Kayla; children Kim Gahring of Aurora, CO; Jill Bennett of Los Angeles, CA; Tonya Yoder of Ft. Collins, CO; Logan Shellenberger of Stow and Ryan Shellenberger of Sedalia, CO, as well as 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home for visitation Wednesday 4 to 8 PM.  Private burial with military honors Thursday at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.  Dr. Douglas Ley will conduct a memorial service Friday 11 AM at The Chapel, 135 Fir Hill, Akron 44304.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to SAT-7 Ministries, P.O.
