Obituary of H. Vaughn Smith
FALLEN FLAG: add another name to the roster.
H. Vaughn “Doc” Smith climbed aboard a train leaving for a new and better place on September 9, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Betty Jenkins Smith, who preceded him in death on April 26, 2006. He was born on May 31, 1921. Raised in Cuyahoga Falls, he graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in the January class of 1939, and attended Kent State University earning degrees in Zoology and Chemistry followed by graduate work in rubber chemistry at the University of Akron. He was a member of Phi Sigma Xi science fraternity. Following a brief stint in the US Army, he was discharged in order to attend Temple University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1948 with his M.D. He was a member of Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity, Alpha Lambda chapter. Vaughn completed his internship at Akron City Hospital in 1949 then set up his family practice in Stow where he provided service and comfort to his many patients until he retired in 1986.
Vaughn was a member of the American Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Society, the Summit County Medical Society, the Akron Railroad Club (past president), and the A. C. & Y Historical Society. He was a past member of the American Academy of Science, the National Audubon Society, and the American Chemical Society.
Vaughn led a full and fascinating life. He was a man with many hobbies and interests: history, horticulture, music, science, electronics, aviation, and, of course, railroads. Those who were familiar with his basement library know just how much Vaughn loved to read and try new things. He loved to play his Hammond organ. He loved all his pets. He loved to travel, especially by train.
He was preceded in death by his his lovely wife Betty Jenkins Smith, to whom he had been married for 36 years, mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. Pritchard Smith, brother, William Stanford Smith, and sister, Eleanor Bredsen.
He will miss his friends and the staff of Stow-Glen Retirement Community where he recently lived. Thank you for all your help and support. Thank you also to Rev. Kurk Bruce and the congregation at Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
There will be no calling hours or service. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls or the Stow-Glen Residents Acts of Kindness Fund, 4285 Kent Road, Stow 44224.
