Obituary of Chris Ody

AKRON - Chris “Christy” Ody, 94, passed away peacefully August 8, 2011 with his loving family by his side. Born in Lemont, Illinois, he was a longtime area resident of Akron. He proudly served his country during WWII in the US Navy and was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. Chris owned Ody’s Grocery and managed Red Barn and Lujan’s Restaurant. He loved taking care of his 55 rose bushes and talking sports, especially the Cleveland teams. Preceded in death by sisters Sarah, Julia, Elizabeth and Louise, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen (Dente); daughters Joyce (Richard) Hager of Munroe Falls and Denise (William) Deckard of Stow; grandchildren Jeff Hager of Cuyahoga Falls, Kevin Hager of Stow, Michael Deckard of Akron and Christa Deckard of Chicago, Ill.; great-grandson Miles; sister Clara Keilani of Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews and special neighbors Debbie and Warren, Denny and Judy, Mark and Danny and Julie. The family would like to thank the staff at Akron City Hospital for their special care of Papa. Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home for visitation Friday 1 to 3 PM and 5 to 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday 10 AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne Street (off Canton Road), Akron. Chris would want you to wear bright colors. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors provided by Charles Faust Post #281.
