Obituary of Mary Alda Musick
Mary Alda Musick, 97, died December 18, 2010 at home with grace, dignity, and a loving connectedness marking a life well lived and sharing a legacy to be honored.
What we, her four children, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and beloved friends will take with us from the gift of her life: She wanted to “light one candle rather than curse the darkness.” She had an unwavering dedication to family and simultaneous independence that was special. She saw the foibles in all of us but never judged. She was always willing to tackle injustice, always seeking consensus, but never accepting defeat. She was a vigilant crusader for human rights. She sought justice for the disenfranchised and rights for the underserved. She possessed a gracious tolerance and joyous commitment. She taught us that we can continue to contribute to others lives despite outward limitations. She taught us to celebrate each day. She taught us how to live an elegant and gracious life. She taught us about faith and perseverance. She taught us about resolve with never a hint of self pity. She taught us about the value of hard work and the compulsion to perform even the smallest task the “right” way. She was the mother, the nana and the grandmother who believed deeply in fairness. She taught us to be “strong in the broken places.”
Mother was the consummate professional, retiring with over 30 years of “Meritorious Service” from the Federal Government. She continued an active life of service and leadership in politics, in her church and with many social action organizations dedicated to justice, world peace, the welfare of older adults and the education and care of young children.
Friends may call Tuesday 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1361 West Market Street, Akron, with the service to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial at Greenlawn Cemetery.
