Obituary of Betty Comstock
Betty E. (nee Bateson) Comstock (O’Hara, DiLauro)
Betty E. Comstock died August 31, 2015. Betty was born May 4, 1924 in Louisville, OH to Frances (Higgins) and C. Smith Bateson. The Bateson family moved to Akron in 1932. Betty graduated from Buchtel High School and the University of Akron. She was secretary to the Dean of College of Education at the University and then went on to Vaughn Machinery in Cuyahoga Falls for 2 years before joining Ohio Edison Company. She spent 30 years at Ohio Edison, the last 25 in the Legal Department. She retired as secretary to the Vice President and General Counsel in 1987.
She was a member of the National Secretaries Association (now IAAP), where she held many offices and committee chairmanships, including the presidency. In 1974 she was selected Secretary of the Year for her chapter and completed for the International title as well.
She was a member of the Akron Woman’s City Club where she served on several boards and held a number of offices. She was a very active volunteer at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens where she guided visitors through the manor house for 28 years. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Board at Stan Hywet and held a number of offices, including a two year term as president, as well as several committee chairmanships. She also enjoyed working in the administrative offices.
She was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls.
She married Dr. Jay L. O’Hara of the University in 1946. After his death in 1963 she married Joseph DiLauro in 1968. They were married 28 years until his death in 1966. In 1999 she married Oscar (Ozzie) Comstock.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ozzie, brother Russell (Emily) of Akron, nieces Michele Conrad (Dan) of Anchorage, Alaska, Denise Lindsey of Sandusky and Nanette Bateson of Huron, stepchildren of the Dilauro family, and stepchildren of the Comstock family.
Rev. Kirk Bruce will conduct service at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 130 Broad Blvd., Cuyahoga Falls Saturday 12 Noon and where friends may call Saturday from 10 am until service time. Interment Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens.
