Obituary of Carl G. Hood, Sr.

Carl G. Hood, Sr., 94, went home to be the Lord March 4, 2016. Born in Akron, he was a US Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the most famous submarine of WWII, the USS Wahoo (SS 238) on the fifth and sixth tours, on the USS Gato and at the Atomic tests on Bikini Island. He served as the fire-controlman on the Wahoo feeding data into the Torpedo Data Computer from the Captain. The USS Wahoo was credited with sinking the most tonnage of enemy shipping than all other submarines in the fleet. The Hollywood movie “Run Silent, Run Deep” was largely based on the exploits of the Wahoo. After his discharge, Mr. Hood worked at the General Motors Plant in Parma and retired in 1983 after 30 years of service. Carl was very caring, loving and considerate of others. He loved his family very much and had a keen sense of humor which he shared with others every chance he got. He was very faithful in attending the Wasson Family Reunion back in Pennsylvania on the first Saturday in August for most of the 75 years they have been meeting. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Miriam; children Tim (Karin)Hood of Fremont, CA, Carl Hood Jr. of Peninsula, Oh and Susan (Dave) Anderson of Cuyahoga Falls, Oh; grandchildren Emily(Patrick) Allen, Abby Elliot, Rachelle (Will)Hodge, Jon (Sara)Anderson and Ryan Anderson, and great-grandchildren Olive Allen and Nora Hodge. He is preceded in death by his two sons, Alan Douglas Hood and Curtis Steven Hood; his siblings: Edith Shira, Edwinna Stevens, John Hood and Alma Robinson. Pastor Matthew Skifstad will conduct the funeral service Thursday 7 PM at Victory Life Church, 3833 Hudson Drive, Stow 44224, with military honors provided by the US Navy. Friends are invited to come to the church from 5 PM till 7PM for viewing. Service to follow immediately after viewing at the church. There will be a private interment Friday at Rose Hill Burial Park.
