Obituary of Gaye Rose Savory

CUYAHOGA FALLS - Gaye Rose (Leatherberry) Savory, was born June 27, 1943, and passed away August 8, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dean J. and Josephine (Courtheyn) Leatherberry; sister, Joyce Marie (Leatherberry) Handwork; and son, Brian D. Savory. She leaves to mourn: her husband, James W. Savory; daughter, Diane M. Savory, brother In Law, Richard L. Handwork; grandchildren, Zoey Danielle Fisher, Dominic J. Savory, Mackenzie I. Fisher and Benjamin B. Savory; brothers, Raymond D. (Brenda) Leatherberry and Gary R. (Elsie) Leatherberry; James R. Fisher; many nephews; a niece; many other relatives in a large family tree; other dear friends and her four beloved cats. Gaye earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Education at Kent State University and went on to teach for three years at Sandy Valley High School in Magnolia, Ohio. She married James W. Savory on June 29, 1968 in Augusta, Ohio and joined him in Charleston, SC, where he was stationed in the United States Air Force. She taught typing and Gregg Shorthand to military personnel through the Charleston AFB Base Education Office, until Jim was transferred to Germany at Lindsey Air Force Station with MARCE - Material Assets Redistribution Center, Europe. She also taught Typing there through the Army Base Education Center at Lindsay AS, Germany. During the twelve months they were in Germany, they accumulated 35,000 miles on their ’65 VW, took many, many bus trips to attractions around Jim’s duty station, and enjoyed many weekends visiting Gaye’s Great Aunt & Uncle, Alice & Toussaint Courtheyn in Brussels, Belgium. On returning home, they settled on Campbell St. in Cuyahoga Falls, planning to stay there a few years and perhaps move to something larger. Gaye taught Adult Education at Stow Parks & Recreation for over 21 years, starting with Typing and Shorthand, and learning various Word Processing programs as computers took over the traditional course offerings, and moved on to include various subjects in Microsoft Office as demand grew for more “Cutting Edge” topics. While working with Stow Parks, she also began teaching at various venues in Cuyahoga Falls, including Adult Education in the School System, and in the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Cuyahoga Falls. Her topics were the same, plus other more computer related titles as she developed topics based on demand by her students. Her classes have occurred at the Stow & Monroe Falls Public library, the Cuyahoga Falls Public Library, the Riverfront YMCA, and the Quirk Cultural Center, where she worked the past 14½ years, retiring at the end of 2015 due to insurance funding rules by the OPERS system. At the Quirk Center, the Computer Lab was located in the First Grade classroom used by her Son, Brian D. Savory, and his Kindergarten classroom now houses the Woodshop for Parks class offerings! For the last of her tenure with Parks, Gaye had been at the Front Desk as Receptionist, since the Computer Lab had been deconstructed due to lack of updating by the City. She loved spending time with her four rambunctious, incredible grandchildren, laughing, playing and spoiling them. She also enjoyed gardening, taking walks, visiting craft shows & art festivals, yard & rummage sales, and especially traveling with her husband Jim. Those fortunate enough to know Gaye will remember her courageousness, persistence, generosity and helpfulness. The family is so grateful for the time spent together and will greatly miss her. Family and friends will gather at Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow, OH, where Pastor Jim Case will conduct a funeral service on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 12 noon, where friends may call from 10AM until service time. Interment at Augusta Cemetery, Augusta, OH. Directions to the cemetery will be available at the Funeral Home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Falls Cancer Club, P. O. Box 3244, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223.
