Obituary of Helen M. Ody

Helen M. Ody, 91, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side, August 6, 2016. She was born in Jeannette, PA, May 16, 1925. Helen was a longtime Akron resident and member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. Along with her late husband Chris, they owned and operated Ody’s Grocery and had also been employed with O’Neil’s. Helen was active in bowling leagues and card clubs, enjoyed crocheting and knitting and was an avid reader. Preceded in death by her husband Chris in 2011, and her brothers Tom, John and Richie, she is survived by her daughters Joyce (Richard) Hager of Munroe Falls, Denise (William) Deckard of Stow; grandchildren Jeff (Trisha) Hager, Kevin (Julia) Hager, Michael (Elyse) Deckard, Christa (Nick) Jones; great-grandsons Miles Hager and Will Deckard, brother Bill Dente, numerous nieces and nephews and special neighbors. Helen will be missed by all of her special “sweethearts” at The Gables of Kent Ridge, Bath Creek Estates, Western Reserve ICU and Hospice of VNS. Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home for visitation Friday from 4 to 8 PM. Mass of the Christian Burial Saturday 10 AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2603 Benton Ave., Akron 44312, Fr. Mike Williamson celebrant. Burial Holy Cross Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and Hospice of VNS.
