Obituary of Minnie A. Hawk
Minnie A. Hawk, 94, was reunited with her loving husband on November 20, 2016.
Born Domenica Ann Colilli in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Domenic Colilli and Carmela Caligiuri. She was a resident of Akron, Ohio, since 1943, after graduating from the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus. For 60 years, she was actively involved in the deaf community locally, statewide, and nationally. A long-time member of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, Ohio Association of the Deaf (OAD), Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association, Akron Club of the Deaf and charter member of the Akron Auxiliary Division No. 154 where she served as president and secretary. She served in many positions in the OAD to help advance membership. She was awarded a namesake award created in her honor the "Minnie Hawk Spirit of OAD" for her advocacy and spirit for the deaf in Ohio and was inducted into the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf Hall of Fame.
Minnie was a housewife, a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother and a good friend and mentor to many. She will be greatly missed but will live within them forever.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Alvin Hawk; brother, Bert Cole; sisters Filli Petrella, Mary DeJohn, Helen DeJohn, Josephine Zuk and Frances Calabrese; son-in-law James Castner, daughter-in-law Susan Hawk and granddaughter Tracy Castner. She is survived by many devoted and adoring family members; a loving mother to her sons Jack Hawk of Canton, James Hawk of Marietta, Georgia, Steven (Susie) Hawk of Birmingham, Alabama and her beloved daughter Mella Castner of Stow; adoring grandmother to Cory (Sarah) DeVenture, Christopher (Beth) Hawk, Aaron (Rachel) Hawk, Alana Hawk, Jessico Plott, Laney Plott, and Ruby Hawk; great grandchildren Dylan, Eva, Enzo and Kayden; brother-in-law Eugene Calabrese of Toronto, Ohio; sister-in-law Lee DeLay of Jackson, Ohio; and many nephews and nieces.
A special thank you to the staff at Falls Village Skilled Nursing and Harbor Lights Hospice for their compassionate care.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 3 to 7 PM at Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Rd, Stow, OH 44224. Father Mike Ausperk will conduct the funeral service Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Redmon Funeral Home, where friends may call from 9 AM until service time. Entombment following the funeral at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eva DeVenture Benevolent Fund, 4081 Klein Avenue, Stow, Ohio 44224 in support of her beautiful nine year old great granddaughter who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or Triad Deaf Services, 408 9th Street SW #2100, Canton, Ohio 44707, where her son Jack serves as the Director.
