Obituary of Harold S. "Hal" Schaus, Jr.
Harold S. “Hal” Schaus, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on January 5, 2017. Hal was born July 4, 1932, in Mansfield, Ohio, the only child of Harold S. Schaus, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Rower) Schaus.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy (Williams); three sons: Scott of Minneapolis; Kent (Bridget) of Akron; and, Eric of Greensburg, PA; and, two grandchildren, Spencer and Siara of Greensburg, PA.
Hal was a 1950 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School and then attended Florida State University on a tennis scholarship. He lettered and was the number one singles player 4 years at FSU and graduated with a M.S. in Psychology.
Hal will be remembered for his love of and commitment to family, faith, psychology, and tennis. He was a member of The Chapel and was chairman of The Chapel’s coordinated ministry to the professional tennis tour. He umpired amateur and professional tennis matches and was chairman of the NEOTA (Northeast Ohio Tennis Association) Sectional team (three years) that participated at the Midwestern regionals, where he won several age group doubles titles with many partners. Hal was also a 15-time member of the United States Gordon Trophy team and paired with many different partners from across the USA.
In May 1970, Hal opened an office for the private practice of psychology. He was profoundly concerned about the profession of psychology and thus founded the Akron Area Professional Psychologists and twice served as the group’s president. Hal was also president of the Tri-State Groups Psychotherapy Society, twice president of the International Society for the Communicative Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and held other offices of these professional groups.
One of Hal’s greatest passions was teaching. He taught Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF) at The Chapel for many years and had been leader of an Home ABF class until three years ago. Hal delighted in challenging people to think broadly and deeply about their faith in order to give reasons for their belief in Christ.
