Obituary of William A. Burkle

CUYAHOGA FALLS – William A. Burkle, 96, went home to be with the Lord March 11, 2017. Born in Lafayette, IN, he had retired from Alcoa in 1983, was a Cuyahoga Falls resident for 11 years, and attended Christ Community Chapel. Bill was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific as a helmsman on the troop ship USS General D. E. Altman, traveling from Richmond,CA through the Panama Canal to Marseilles, France, picking up troops, then back through the Panama Canal to Okinawa. With Japan's surrender on August 14, 1945, on their way back, they dropped off the troops on the ship and picked up personnel who were designated to come home. Bill also was on shore patrol as a handler, training dogs to alert for enemy submarines on the East coast. (Some enemy subs were caught off the coast of New Jersey.) For more than 70 years, Bill was a member of both the American Legion Post 11 and the Forty and Eight Chateau in Lafayette, IN. In younger years, Bill enjoyed camping with his family and camping group of several other families (including many Disney World trips); working crossword puzzles all his retired life (34 years), always the life of the party, hosting grandchildren during the summer on fun trips; square dancing; fishing, and all Purdue football and basketball games. Preceded in death by his sister Doris Eberhart, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores (Dee); daughter Janet (Ray) Dalton; sons David A. (Penny) and Michael W. (Jennifer); Also survived by grandchildren Jeff (Linsey) Dalton; Lindsay (Scot) Sines ; Nick (Nina Leathers) Dalton; Jeremy Dalton; Breanne (Alex) Dalton Huguenard ; Dylan Burkle, Zach Burkle and Jordan Burkle Mayo (David); Will Burkle; Ellie Burkle. Great-grandchildren Hunter, Ryder, Ledger, and Calder Dalton; Reagan, Lilli and Zeke Sines; Cameron and Calista Dalton; Lockewood, Anne Charlotte and (Sept. baby due) Huguenard; sister Jackie Gushwa and faithful rescue dog, Ella. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, June 17th at 4:30 PM at Redmon Funeral Home, where visitation will also be held from 3 PM until service time.
