Obituary of Robert L. Myers
On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, Dad rounded third and slid into home plate into the loving arms of his Savior. Born on May 21, 1927 on his grandparents’ farm east of Hanoverton, Ohio, he was the eldest son of Harry B. and Margaret (Longanecker) Myers. One of eleven children.
Bob graduated from Augusta High School in Augusta, Ohio in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to his graduation. He served 15 months in the Pacific Theatre near Samar in the Philippine Islands. While in school, he participated in football, basketball and most especially baseball. A lifetime baseball fan, he was a member of the baseball team at Mount Union College in 1949 and 1950 and, after the service, auditioned with the Cleveland Indians but was told he spent too much time between home plate and first base (wasn't fast enough)! He also played in a softball league with some of his high school teammates. Later he participated in bowling and golf. Baseball and golf were his passions. Bob also was a contributor to and a follower of Kent State University baseball and golf teams. He did enjoy a ten-day trip to Florida in 2003 to watch the Detroit Tigers in spring training.
Growing up in the depression, he worked from an early age selling the Grit magazine, working as a gandy dancer on the railroad, selling insurance and clerking for the Loudon Ford Motor Company in Hanoverton, Ohio and the United Local School Board. After completing his bachelor's degree at Mount Union College in 1966, he accepted a position at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where he was Coordinator of Special Events, Director of Parking Services and finally, Grounds Administrator. He retired from Kent State in 1989.
He held memberships in Sandy Valley Lodge #408 serving as Master in 1958, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a fifty-year member of the First Christian Church of Stow, Ohio.
Married to his high school sweetheart, Myra May (Owen) Myers on July 9, 1949, they celebrated 68 years of marriage on July 9,2017. She survives at home. He is also survived by his children Kathryn, Robert and his children Jordon Lambert and Alyssa Michele, and Gordon (Felomina) of Raleigh, North Carolina and his children Nicole Elizabeth (Eric) Domuczicz of North Carolina and Kelly Katherine (Chad) Martin of North Carolina as well as great grandchildren David, Isaac and Jonathan Domuczicz and Kadence and Rhys Martin. He is survived by sisters Marcia Reed (Minerva, Ohio) and Patsy Myers (Hanoverton, Ohio) and brothers Jim (Carole, deceased) (Hanoverton, Ohio), George (Rose) (Eaton, Ohio) and John (whereabouts unknown). He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Helen (Charles, deceased) Schmid, Betty (Carl, deceased) Marietta and Mary Myers, as well as brothers Jack (Margaret Call) and
Harry (Reba Barker). He is also preceded in death by nephews Billy Schmid, George Marietta, Rodney Myers and Mike Myers.
Never having met a stranger (!), we are sure Dad is in heaven with family and friends sharing many stories and giggling until he cries with his brother Harry!
