Obituary of Lois Marie Bates

CUYAHOGA FALLS – Lois Marie Bates, 77, died September 2, 2017.

Born in Wadsworth, Lois was raised in Remsen, OH.  She was a 1958 graduate of Highland High School and a 1962 graduate of Bowling Green State University.  Lois had been a Stow resident for 45 years prior to moving to Cuyahoga Falls in 2014.  She was a dedicated teacher and recipient of many awards including the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation grant.  In 2000, after 38 years, she retired from the Stow schools, where she had taught at Fishcreek Elementary since 1969.   Since her retirement, Lois and Hal became snowbirds and spent their winters in the Bay Indies community in Venice, FL.   Lois was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and watched them religiously.  She also enjoyed square dancing, hiking the Summit County Metro Parks, sewing and quilting, while her greatest joy was time spent gardening.

Preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Millicent Simon, she is survived by her husband of over 55 years, Harold; sons Todd and Shawn (Christi) Bates; grandchildren Ty and Mitch Bates, sister Doris (Alvin) Clapp; nephews Jeffrey and Steven Clapp; cousins Bob (Becky) Kelly, Ray (Julie) Kelly, and Jim (Gail) Kelly.

Lois’ family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Payne, Cooper Cancer Center oncologist, for her care and compassion over the last five years and the Summa at Home Hospice for their care and compassion.  Special thanks to close friends Erna Kerr and Tracy Piatt for their daily diligence with Lois' care.
