Obituary of John Alway Lovell
…..well……..to make a long story short………
John A. Lovell, 86 passed away January 17, 2018.
Born in Dexter, MI, to parents John and Hannah, Jack graduated from Dexter High School in Dexter, MI and from Michigan State University with a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering. Jack retired from the chemistry division of Goodyear Tire in Akron, OH after more than 40 years of service and the awarding of numerous patents, particularly for work on polymers and spray coatings and other things incomprehensible to his children. Of course, we had more excuses about not understanding his work than Carter has little pills.
Jack enjoyed reading, making pessimistic observations about the chances of any Cleveland sports teams’ chances in any given game, and trips with his late wife Ellen, and trips to the Outer Banks with his children and, later his grandchildren. His chemical engineering expertise was on full display whenever he made his “world-famous” ice cream. In a generation in which men did not express emotions, except, perhaps anger, Jack often told his children he loved them. Although he threatened his children often during long trips in the car, Jack never did, in fact, shake us until our teeth rattled.
Reunited with his wife of 60 years, Ellen, and his daughter Amy, the three of them are probably sitting on a beach together, reading. Hopefully, Jack’s hearing is restored so Ellen doesn’t have to shout at him to be heard. Jack is survived by his children, Andrew T. Lovell, Patricia E. (Bill) Stieger, John A. (Patty) Lovell II, Steven M. Lovell, and Colin P. Lovell; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sibling Alice Walz of Chelsea, MI.
The family wishes to thank Jack’s nurses and caregivers at Continuing Healthcare of Cuyahoga Falls, particularly Mary, for their compassionate care during his last year. Thank you to Clear Path Hospice for easing his passage during his last week.
To honor Jack, hug your children and tell them you love them.
