George Zitzmann

Obituary of George P. Zitzmann

George Paul Zitzmann, 63, was united with Jesus Christ in heaven on Saturday, October 6, 2018.

A resident of Munroe Falls, he leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Denise, son Christopher (Bethany); daughter Nicole (Scott Sheaffer); mother Olga Zitzmann; sister, Olga Jean Meekins (James); grandchildren Peyton, Anna, Joel and Luke Zitzmann, and Nora and William Sheaffer.

George was born in Flushing, NY on June 3, 1955 to George and Olga Zitzmann. A graduate of Flushing Christian School and 1973 graduate of Francis Lewis High School, he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from LeTourneau University in Texas. George worked for 41 years at Babcock & Wilcox Construction and, since 1989, as a project engineer in Barberton, Ohio.

He was recognized as a gifted engineer, but George’s deepest passion was to help young couples build strong marriages.  Burdened by the divorce epidemic, George and Denise were involved with Marriage Ministry at The Chapel in Akron for years, where they personally mentored and counseled couples about communication, finances and biblical commitment, based on a relationship with Jesus Christ.

George also recognized a need for strong fatherly role models.  He invested in his own children, but was also considered a father by many relatives, neighborhood kids, and students from The Chapel Boys Brigade and The Chapel High School Youth Group, where he and Denise volunteered for ten years.

George often used his personal hobbies - such as auto repair, home remodeling, gardening and sailing - as a means to connect with and serve others.  A true ambassador of Christ, George’s humble servant heart will be missed by all.

Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home for visitation Friday 5 to 8 PM.  Pastor Isaac Van Epps will conduct a celebration of life service Saturday 10:30 AM in Memorial Chapel at The Chapel, 135 Fir Hill, Akron 44304, where friends may also call from 9 AM until service time.  Burial will follow at Silver Springs Cemetery in Stow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ministries where George’s son and niece serve:  His son, Chris, and wife, Bethany Zitzmann, serve in disaster relief with Christ In Action, P.O.
