I know people say you are lucky if you have 5 really good friends that you keep in touch with and you can really count on. Mike was one of my 5, and I am sure he was for others as well. Although I will greatly miss Mike, I know his determination and toughness will continue on in all those who worked with him.
One of my favorite memories with Mike was being so excited to be able to help him move from Cleveland to Marion. It was finally a chance to help out Smitty because he had always been quick to help me with my Isuzu Amigo issues, and also invited me to a Brown’s game in his dry cleaning van.
I thought the calling hours and interment ceremony were a reflection of all the people Mike has impacted with his warm and gererous heart. He’d probably kick my ass for saying that, but it is what it is. Love ya man.

I’m sorry for your loss, pain and suffering. Whenever we lose a loved one in death we feel a sting and a void in our hearts, as if someone ripped part of our heart out. The pain seems like it will never go away. It will with time, or it will at least ease up. The Bible reassures us of that in 1 Corinthians 15:54,55 - “Death is swallowed up forever. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?” God promises us there will be no more death. (Rev. 22:3,4). Turn to him in prayer.

I have so many awesome memories of Mike. I spent the last few days sorting out what my favorite Smitty memory was; was it the time in 8th grade when he had a fever and still rushed for 220 yards and like 4 tds? Was it the time at varsity practice as freshman he literally carried 4 would be varsity tacklers an extra 10 yards and the subsequent look on the coach’s face? Nope, not my favorites. My favorite was the summer going into our freshman year and my family was going through a tough time. Mike was literally the first one to ride his bike over to make sure everything was ok, make sure I kept my head up. That has stuck with me and meant the world to me. You’ll be missed my friend.

Amy / Bill,
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike and working closely with him at Whirlpool for almost 8 years. He was one of the most Can Do individuals that I've ever met and always offered help if he could assist. Whether it was work related or something as simple as connecting you and my daughter together in the Medical Sciences field to help her pursue her dream, he was there. Mike had been battling this disease for a long time, and much longer than many knew, but he never let it get in the way of life or his family. He was a courageous man. Please accept my heart felt condolences and celebrate Mike's life and the time that you had together with him

I met Smitty in the summer of 96. He showed up at Kent Football 2 a days driving a 1970 Buick Skylark Convertible with a 2bbl 350...........He won my admiration from that point on. :-) I have met few people in my life who possess the drive to achieve something greater than themselves more than Smitty. Smitty exemplified the American Dream. Smitty could not hear those people who said,”It can’t be done.” To those of us who knew him, he was an INSPIRATION. We rallied around him and we loved him and his NEVER DIE spirit. Smitty did not complain. He did not want sympathy. He did not want tears. Smitty strived to be the best that he could be at EVERYTHING he chose to endeavor and he inspired all those around him to do the same. Thank you for always being there for me my Friend. Thank you for all the GREAT memories. From buckets of Atomic chicken wings at Quaker Steak and Lube to the many St. Patties Day blowouts in Defiance, to salvaging that 455 engine and 400 turbo out of that dilapidated 73 Riviera. You will live on through me. “To live in the hearts of those we leave behind, is not to die.”

Mike was our son-in-law who was loved as a son.
He loved our daughter, Amy, with all his heart. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for her. He was quiet and gentle. If someone needed help he was there. When we walked into the hospital room on the day that Bill was born there was this beaming dad holding him in his arms. So proud. Bill grew to be his buddy riding excitedly with dad in the Tahoe. Bill handed him tools as he fixed things. Mike will always be in our hearts and memories as there are unending stories filled with love and laughter. May you Rest In Peace while you and Roscoe watch over Amy and Bill from that recliner in Heaven.

To The Smith Family,
My deepest sympathy to all of you. I know Mike will be missed by so many. What great memories I have of him and the Smith family and Hudson Football. Mike was one tough kid. I wanted him to play Guard and he wanted to stay at Fullback. Little did he know that the power offense we ran back then featured the Fullback as a blocking Guard. He was one of, if not, the best "overthrow" blocker I ever coached with our Run and Shoot plays.
Mike was so much fun and I appreciated having you guys as Steeler fans in that hotbed of Browns territory. To all of you, Mike will live in our hearts as we carry great memories of the light he shined on our lives.
I love the Smith family.

He was a pleasure to have in class and especially as a member of the KSU Student AFS chapter in which, among his Football teammates and AFS friends there were many trips and experiences we'll all hold as fond memories. The speed with which this news spread attests to the strength of his relationships with his many friends. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mike was one of the coolest guys we've ever known. He was smart, strong, fun and easy going, but definitely serious when it came to the important stuff. He was also always willing to lend a helping hand. One of our favorite memories is when Mike, Amy and Roscoe came out to Dragway 42 for the Halloween Thing celebration with us. Mike really enjoyed helping Ron to get the car ready for each and every race and he also did a great job of keeping the guys from going thirsty while waiting in line - Mike kept filling up Roscoe's backpack with cans of beer. He said he didn't have a beer mule, he had a beer boxer. Roscoe was also one of a kind. Our hearts break for (my niece) Amy, Bill, Mike's parents, in-laws and the rest of his family. He will truly be missed by everyone he ever came in contact with. We're thankful we knew him. God's speed Smithers! XO

Mike and I graduated from high school together. We were usually in the same home room and in several classes together because our last names were alphabetically close. He was always so nice, very funny, and liked to give me a hard time (jokingly, of course). Such a great guy. My heart hurts for his family. I’m so very sorry. Too young, too soon. Thinking of and praying for you all. RIP, Mike.

We came in to KSU the same yr ‘96. You’d be hard pressed to find a guy with more heart or fight in him. He was respected by the whole locker room as a good man. Hard nosed, hard worker and smart. Billy, your dad was a good man that made no excuses and earned everything he got the old fashioned way! He was a great example for sure. Godspeed to the Smith family.

Not sure what to say...so sorry to hear about Mike being gone. I heard he had some health issues a few years back but this news blind sided me. I going to keep my message positive & fun because that’s the way Mike would have wanted it. I played football with Mike at Kent had some damn good times with him in college. Most of the stories you don’t want to hear...and I don’t want to tell. You already know he was one hell of a guy. Easy going, loved by everyone & was always there to help a friend in need. Mike went with me to purchase my first bike because I couldn’t even ride a bike at the time! Guess who taught me to ride? I’ll never forget him. I moved to Texas shortly after college and have always been terrible about keeping in touch with people. For that I apologize, I’ve only lost a few friends in my life but this one has hit me hard. I will not be able make the service my wife will be out of town for work & I have twins to attend to. Could someone please mail me a funeral memorial card or prayer card from the service? It would be greatly appreciated. Again I’m sorry for your loss. Thanks for your time.
