I will always remember the last time I saw Caroline...at one of our neighborhood "Drive-way Movie Nights"...socially distancing because of COVID-19 but still fun with lots of laughter and catching up. I believe she was the one who suggested our last movie night selection of the summer: "Little Miss Sunshine." It was a happy, companionable evening.
The Medieval Persian Poet Saadi wrote (loosely translated):
"When of thy worldly goods thou art bereft...
and of thy store, two loaves are left...
sell one, and with the dole
buy hyacinths to feed the soul.
I planted hyacinth bulbs this past weekend in honor and memory of Caroline. When they bloom next spring, I will think of her with a smile.

What made Caroline smile.
Caroline love to feed birds. She would sit outside on a wooden bench on our front porch and look down the walkway at her bird feeders almost every day. She loved her blue jays the most and would feed them unshelled peanuts. I am pretty sure we feed most of the blue jays in the state of Ohio. Often, she would hear them calling her begging for more, she got a big kick out of that.
13 years ago or so, I bought her a red eared slider turtle off the internet. It was the size of a quarter. Caroline raised Mr. T until he grew too large for his aquarium home. That late summer we released him across the lake that we live on and hoped that he would survive. I didn’t have much hope that he would. The following summer Caroline would call out for Mr. T from our deck and one day when I arrived home from work, she said she saw him. Well, that was hard to believe that he would do a swim-by but sure enough a few days later I saw him too. She looked and called for Mr. T every summer and he has returned every year to the present day. We see him almost every summer day as he stops by to tease the dogs and to get a snack. Caroline loved Mr. T and he made her smile many a day.
Caroline loved our dogs. She brought Teddy with her from Colorado and he lived a good life. A couple of years after he passed away, we got Jaxx and Abby. They added a lot joy to her life. Every day she would come downstairs and start to smile and laugh as they competed for her attention. They begged her to play fetch and of course Caroline was the treat master. In the evening Abby would curl up and snuggle and stay close to her side.
But I think Caroline enjoyed and treasured her family heritage the most. She loved to tell stories about her great aunts and growing up on a northern California cattle ranch. She was proud of her Dad, brother and sister and her sister’s family. But most of all she was very proud of her son and daughter and her grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than to spend time with them and to talk/video chat with them.
That’s the way that I will remember Caroline.

My very sincerest and deepest sympathy in the loss of Caroline. Caroline was my favorite cousin. Her father and my father were brothers. I have the fondest memories as a young girl spending time together at the Trubschenck ranch in North San Juan. Riding horses, sleep overs in the bunk house, fun at the river. And as a teenager, Caroline visiting me at my home in Sacramento bleaching my hair blond in the middle of the night so my mom wouldn't find out. We had the best of times, and I am so happy to have such wonderful memories of her.
Rest in peace, Caroline.
Much love to you always,
Ruthie (Trubschenck)
