I love you, Gramps. I miss you so much and think of you many times per day.
Here is my reflection that I read at your service. When a person passes from this life to the next, it’s a natural reflex to do an assessment. Was it a life well-lived? There are a range of ways to assess the sum of person’s life to determine where they fall on the spectrum between a tragic versus a successful life, lived to the fullest.
We seem to subconsciously run this algorithm based on who they were and what they did while here. What was their character? What did they accomplish? Did they contribute to the greater good in any way? Did they impact someone’s life for the better? Is the world a better place because they were in it?
My grandfather, Tony Gatto, was a man of strength and courage. He was fearless and tough. He was hardworking, with a strong sense of duty. He was so smart and never stopped learning. He was frugal, never taking for granted money or time. And while not sensitive, (he was too much of a strong lion for that) he had a giant heart that flowed with love for his family and many, many friends. He didn’t speak of love, instead he showed it. He was a man who had immense empathy, which he showed with limitless generosity, for which he wanted nothing in return, not even a thank you. He gave quietly, not for applause but from a sincere heart. A heart that knew what it was to endure hardship. Although, that wouldn’t be obvious by his gregarious nature. He lit up every room he was in and was the life of every party. Wherever he went, people were drawn to him and would likely part his company with a sore stomach from laughing. He was hilarious. He never tried to be – he just was.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I can go on for hours telling Gramps stories that exemplify all of these wonderful qualities, and more. There are so many, it’s difficult to summarize or even select a few highlights. And if knew him, you most likely have stories of your own that demonstrate what a great man he is.
So instead of stories, I’ll sum it up with my assessment. Tony Gatto was a man of great character, who accomplished much, gave even more, loved and was loved by many. He was my rock and my hero. He impacted my life, and many others’, for the better and the world will never be as bright without him in it. I am deeply grateful for every moment, every word, every laugh we shared.
By any measure, his was a life well-lived. And I know that the Final Judge is smiling at him saying well done, son, welcome home.

This is the translation from cousin Pia:
We have just received the news of the death of our dear cousin Tony.
And we immediately shared this sad news with all the cousins of Sicily.
Thank you very much Susie for sending us the email.
We have so many fond memories of Tony.
We elders remember him when he came from Germany during the Second World War to visit us in Tripi, in his country of origin.
I, Pia, was the youngest and I was about 8-9 years old.
I had my hair tied up with long long braids and he played with my hair and pulled it affectionately.
He had a beautiful character and made us have a lot of fun. We are happy to have seen him 3 times in recent years in Sicily together with his dear Marilù, whom we love very much and whom we embrace affectionately.
He was a person enthusiastic about life who conveyed his joy of living.
We embrace all of you distant cousins and we hope that some of you will take your place and come to Sicily to visit us.
we are waiting for you.
Cousin Pia Camarda on behalf of all his family and his brothers Renato Silvio Linda, and Enzo's children.
We are the children of your uncle Ludovico, Ninetta and Domenica's younger brother.
We are happy to have heard that he had a peaceful death, at home and without suffering.

Hi Dad, This is Susie. I wanted to thank you for the wisdom you shared, for all that you carried on the strength of your shoulders and all that you held in your heart for me and my siblings, grandchildren and great grandchildren.Thank you for the simple treasured moments that you built into everyday events throughout our childhoods and into adulthood, for the unselfish love you gave, and the example that you lived. Thank you for teaching us respect, a work ethic, faith in God, humor, the importance of stories, the meaning of a handshake, fulfilling a promise, and appreciating education. But most importantly, thank you for being a truly special Dad. I've always known how lucky I was to have you as my Dad!
I love you Dad with all of my heart forever and ever, God Bless You!

Dear Marylou and Gatto Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. He was one of a kind. A true gem. He was always the life of the party, even if it was simply a Businessmen's Club lunch. He was a sharp businessman and I valued his opinions. I always liked talking with him. I am fortunate to have known him and enjoyed his friendship. We are really going to miss him. May he enjoy eternal rest in God's heavenly kingdom. Can you imagine the reunion going on right now up there with his buddies!?!?!? Non-stop laughs for sure. God bless you all.
