Obituary of Myra May Owen Myers

Born on the family farm in Augusta, Ohio, May 24, 1927, Myra May returned to her heavenly farm on Friday, March 19, 2021, after suffering complications from a fall. She was greeted by those who had preceded her: parents, C. Jay and Loa (Watson) Owen; brother, Albert and Ellen Owen; sister Martha Jayne (Owen) and Roland Dorr; and her husband, Robert L. Myers with whom she shared a 68-year journey through life. She can now breathe the fresh air, enjoy the wide-open country, and most of all drink real spring water! Myra was first and always a mom! Doing all the untold things a mom and grandmother does: loving, laughing, cheering and worrying. Until her children were old enough to drive that included chauffeuring for those she loved. However, after making five separate trips to the high school in one night she declared enough! After that, one trip to the high school and a stop at the local library would collect everyone! A 1945 graduate of Augusta High School, Myra was an elementary grade teacher at United Local Schools in Hanoverton, Ohio, and at Brimfield Elementary School in Brimfield, Ohio, after the family moved from Kensington to Kent. She was asked to, and implemented, an experimental program called K-and-a-half for those students leaving kindergarten but not quite ready for first grade. A conscientious and compassionate teacher, she was always looking for ways to break through to a student having difficulty in school. To that end she finished her Bachelor of Science in Education at Kent State University and completed much of her master's program. She was honored to have been named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar for 1978-79. During retirement she and Dad were fortunate to have a close group of friends who enjoyed Friday night dinners and traveling together. She most enjoyed educational trips through special programs at Kent State University and nature trips with Jim and Dorothy Rinier. But most special were the trips to visit grandchildren, family and friends. Those celebrating her well-lived life include her children and grandchildren: Kathryn Ann, Robert Owen and his children, Jordon Lambert and Alyssa Michele, and Lt. Col. Gordon F. Myers USMC Retired (Filomena), and his children, Nicole Elizabeth Myers (Eric) Domuczicz and Kelly Katherine Myers (Chad) Martin. Her great-grandchildren are David, Iszak and Jonathan Domuczicz, and Kadence and Rhys Martin. She has several nieces and nephews from the Owen and Dorr families and extended members of the Myers family. We are all so widespread at this point that we do not often get together as a group, but all are fondly remembered and she was able to follow some from internet postings printed for her to see. Myra was a member of the First Christian Church of Stow and a life member of the Kent State University Alumni Association. At her request, cremation has taken place. Visitation hours will be at the Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow 44224 on Friday, April 23, 2021, from 5 to 7 PM. Face masks and social distancing are required. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Hanoverton Presbyterian Church, 10226 Plymouth Street, Hanoverton, Ohio 44423; the First Christian Church of Stow, 3493 Darrow Road, Stow, Ohio 44224, your favorite educational institution or charity. Services and final interment will take place at the Presbyterian Church and Grove Hill Cemetery in Hanoverton, Ohio on Saturday, April 24, 2021 with visitation at 10:30 AM and service at 11 AM.
