Obituary of Veronica Evelyn Dimengo

Veronica “Ronnie” Dimengo passed away peacefully in her home on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 2021. Born August 8, 1922, Ronnie grew up during the Great Depression in a Slovak community in Barberton. One of five children, she attended Barberton Schools and was active in St. Cyril & Methodius Church. Ronnie sang with her dad’s Slovak orchestra and on the Slovak Radio Hour. Her willingness to answer a call to service began at an early age. In 1943, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” at Goodyear Aircraft. She helped rivet the Martin B‐26 Marauder twin‐engine bomber that helped end WW II. Due to the shortage of nurses in the war, Ronnie joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and graduated from the St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing. She worked with Dr. Bob Smith and Sister Ignatia in the Alcoholics Anonymous ward. While working in North Hill, she was encouraged to go on a blind date with Ronald Dimengo. They married in 1947, raised eight children in Silver Lake, and were active at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow. She returned to work part‐time as a psychiatric nurse at St. Thomas Hospital for several years. Ronnie had a special devotion to St. Joseph and offered prayers and Novenas to friends and loved ones. After she lost her husband in 1984, Ronnie moved to Hudson in 1985 and became a member of St. Mary’s Church. There, she was instrumental in starting a prayer group with five women, which continues to this day. Ronnie moved to Sheffield Lake in 1994 where she enjoyed a love of reading, social visits, and quality time with her children and grandchildren. She counseled pregnant teens, served meals to the homeless, and volunteered to staff the crisis line at NORD Behavioral Center. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Avon Lake. Veronica’s deep faith in Christ is part of her lasting legacy. She counseled and supported dozens of people in times of need. Even in the end, she gave herself to others as a Lifebanc organ donor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Dimengo; parents, Stephen and Mary Kubanis; sisters, Elizabeth, Mildred (Jack) Heislman; brother Stephen; sisters‐in‐law, Clara (Frank) Masiella, Helen Kauffman; brothers‐in‐law, Marino (Marion), Eugene Dimengo; grandson, Ryan Johnson. Ronnie is survived by her sister, Irma Keating; children, Timothy (Lynn), Catherine, Michael (Doug), Mark (Josie), Joel (Linda), Claudia, Christopher, and Maria; grandchildren, Dominic, Erica, Cristina (Wyeth), Nick, Megan (Rob), Jeffrey, Alexa, and eight great‐grandchildren. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11 AM Saturday at Holy Family Parish, 3179 Kent Road, Stow, Ohio. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. Friends will be received from 9 to 11 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities - St. Elizabeth Center, 2726 Caroline Avenue, Lorain, OH 44055.
