Sandra Bartz
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 NIV
I met Sandra Bartz at the St. Davids Christian Writers’ Conference. We took the same workshops and discovered that we both wrote and loved devotions. We prayed, wrote, and critiqued each other. After much work, we were both published in the “Upper Room”.
We became fast friends and prayer partners. When I was overwhelmed by situations and tasks, Sandy said, “Don’t look at everything, just do the next thing.”
When I had a high maintenance friend demanding more than I had to give, Sandy said, “This person’s issues are not your responsibility.”
When we labored, submitted, and found rejection slips or silence for our efforts, Sandy said, “We must be writing for the edification of editors. If that is what God calls us to do, so be it!”
I remember once she wrote a devotion where she commented, “The forbidden fruit could not have been apples. It must have been peaches because they are so much more tempting – Red Haven peaches like we grow in Ohio.” That part was edited out, but it still makes me smile. I cannot think of forbidden fruit or peaches without remembering Sandy, my wonderful friend.
Lord Jesus, you used Sandy to sharpen me. Thank you for allowing us to walk part of life’s journey together. Amen.
