Obituary of George R. Lyon, Jr.

George R. Lyon, Jr., 94, a long-time resident of Stow, Ohio, passed away August 30, 2021. Born in Buffalo, NY, he lived in the Stow area for 60 years prior to moving to Copley, Ohio. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in Europe from 1945 to 1946. George earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a Master’s degree in Administration from The Ohio State University graduating in 1955. George retired in 1983 as Director of Facilities for the Summit County Children’s Services Board. He enjoyed gardening and the simple pleasure of mowing the lawn. He loved music; and toward the end of his life, he made the comment that he thinks music helped him live longer. He enjoyed a special romance with the American West and the adventures of Lewis and Clark with many treks following in their footsteps. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Anne Karis Lyon, Thomas Rugh (Cheryl) Lyon, and Mary Beth Lyon; step-daughter, Sandi (Bill) Lavin; grandchildren, Ashley (Mark) Lawson, Scott William (Katie) Lyon, Emily Karis (Aaron) Robinson, and David Michael Lyon; great-grandchildren, Owen and Lincoln Lawson; Avery, Piper, and Marlowe Lyon; Asher and Charlotte Robinson; and Dahlia and Azalea Lyon. Service will be held at 2:15 PM on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 2301 Romig Road, Akron, OH 44320; the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, 350 Opportunity Parkway, Akron, OH 44307, or Tuesday Musical Association, 1041 West Market Street, #200, Akron, OH 44313.
