Obituary of Bernard (Bernie) H. Scheidler

STOW - Bernard (Bernie) H. Scheidler died on November 10, 2021. He was born in North Ridgeville, OH on August 21, 1934 to Arthur and Hilda (Myers) Scheidler. He graduated from North Ridgeville High in 1952, and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Bernie graduated from Kent State University in 1960 with a BA degree in Business Administration. While at Kent State, Bernie was active in student government and served as President of his Senior Class. After graduation, he joined the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse & Co. and obtained his CPA license. Later he worked for Youngstown Steel Door Co. where he held several leadership positions including; Secretary, Treasurer, V.P. of Finance, and President/Director. He also served as Director of the Lamson and Sessions Co. Later years of work included being V.P. and CFO of Fasteners for Retail and serving as V.P. and General Manager of OrthoConcepts. Bernie was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. He served on many committees as a member of St. Barnabas Parish in Northfield and in later years, as a member of Holy Family Parish in Stow. While at Holy Family, Bernie took an active role in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, was a member of the Pastoral Council, served as Chairman of the parish’s Capital Campaign Subcommittee, distributed Holy Communion in Church and to the home-bound, and served funeral masses. Bernie was equally committed to civic works. He volunteered as a member of the City of Stow’s Planning Commission and its Parks and Recreation Dept. Board. Further examples of his commitment to philanthropy include serving on the KSU College of Business Alumni Council, sitting on the Advisory Board for the Hitchcock Center for Women as well as the Louis T. Masterson & Co. Advisory Board, being a Junior Achievement Advisor, and Little League baseball coach. The Stow Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce awarded Bernie its 2013 Friend of the Community honor. That year the Knights of Columbus at Holy Family Parish gave Bernie its Volunteer of the Year award. He also volunteered as Treasurer of Planned Life Assistance Network of NE Ohio. Bernie enjoyed writing letters to newspapers, having had some 30 letters published in the Beacon Journal, Plain Dealer, and Wall Street Journal. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale (and wife Beverly), Clifford, and Jerry, sister Marti, and brother-in-law, Bill Woodward; Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gloria (known as Petie); his loving children: Beth (Donald) Burgett, Susan (Eric) Lengel, Joan (Lee) Moore, and Bradley (Laurie) Scheidler; sisters, Lois Woodward, Marge (Robert) Grguric, Theresa (Douglas) Roof; sister-in-laws Charlotte and Marilyn; brother-in-law Robert Vagi; sister-in-law Joyce (Roger) Benefield; many nieces and nephews; and his dear grandchildren: Kevin, Megan, Hannah, David, Stephen, and Brady. All friends and family will remember Bernie as a kind man who worked hard for his family. His devotion to his faith and high moral character earned him the nickname, “Pope Bernie.” He loved sports; especially the Indians, Browns, and Ohio State Buckeye football. His children remember all the Indians games he took them to and his incredible patience dealing with four kids needing pretzels, hot dogs, cotton candy, several bathroom breaks, and more while he tried to watch the games. This patience was coupled with a wonderful sense of humor. His “Dad Jokes” were punnier than most, earning them the name of “Scheidler-isms.” Unfortunately, his children have continued this tradition of making jokes that are funny only if everyone was five years old. Thanks, Dad! The family is grateful to the wonderful staff and nurses from the Independent Living and Assisted Living units at Vitalia in Stow and the team at SouthernCare Hospice. We thank you for the excellent care and your kindness. Friends are invited to Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow 44224, for visitation Friday, November 19th from 3 to 7 PM.
