Obituary of George John Mitroi, Sr.
MENTOR - George John Mitroi passed away on January 22, 2022, at the home of his oldest son in Mentor, Ohio, surrounded by family.
He was born to George J. and Aurelia Mitroi on July 6, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan. At the young age of seventeen, George enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He spent his active duty with MacArthur’s Army of Occupation in Yokahoma, Japan. Once discharged, he settled in the Cleveland area eventually finding a career at Ashland Chemical Company until his retirement in 1986. George lived his entire life in the Cleveland area, where he met and married Rose Marie Gribbons in 1951 and raised his family in Bedford Heights.
He was an avid Ohio State Football fan. George loved American history, specifically World War II. His true passion was designing and building model sea vessels. George meticulously drew detailed plans and then built many different types of ships. He would present the ships as gifts to family and friends - over 40 years of shipbuilding. George was proud of his country, his military service, and especially proud of his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doe, in 1994; daughter, Susan Greenwell, and sister, Olympia Halko. George is survived by sons, George (Susan) Mitroi, Thomas Mitroi, and Michael (Eileen) Mitroi; sisters, Irene Stalter and Valarie Bromund. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christine, Gary, Michele, Monica, Thomas, and William; George, Angela, Adam, and Chelsea; Kevin and Benjamin; and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date.
