Obituary of Virgil T. Andy

STOW - Virgil T. Andy passed away January 26, 2022, after living a happy, joyful life of 93 years. He was born May 21, 1928, in Lorain, OH and was inducted in to the U.S. Army in October 1950, and received his basic training in California and Japan. While in Japan, he was a member of the regimental baseball team. He was also selected to climb Mt. Fujiyama, taking four days to complete the climb. His Division was sent to Korea where he spent nine months in combat, receiving a Bronze Star and the S. Korean Pres. Syngman Rhee 40th Division Unit Citation and the 40th Division Combat Ribbon. After being discharged, he earned his mechanical engineering degree under the G.I. Bill of Rights, working at several mold shops, retiring from Akromold after 22 years. Virgil was a member of the “Yonkers” 1945 American Legion Baseball Team, winning the city and state champion titles, and vied for the national title in Flint, MI. He was manager and player of the softball team, winning 10 state titles. For years, Virgil managed little league teams and umpired. He was also Cubmaster for three years for Pack 3174. In 1958, the family joined Holy Family Parish, where he is still a member. Preceded in death by his wife of 61 ½ years, Barbara (nee Oran), and grandson, Tyler, he is survived by his four children, Brenda of Florida, Michael of Akron, Michele Wine of PA, and Paul of Stow; granddaughter, Tara Tippel of PA, grandson, Michael, Jr., of Cleveland, and sister-in-law, Karin Andy of Lorain. Friends may call Monday 6 to 8 PM at Redmon Funeral Home, where service will be held Tuesday 10 AM. Burial Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to America’s VetDogs (vetdogs.org).
