I just found this page, I hope Lou's family still reads it.
I was a student of Lou's 15 years ago, and he was a great influence in my life, motivating to further study math and statistics, as well as to be a better person - Lou definitely had a positive impact on the world.
Rest in peace.

Lou had been a presence in my life for just a short time, but his memory will live on in my heart. Such a large personality should not have been snuffed out so early.
The disease that claimed his life, methodically stripped him of many small and large abilities. He dealt with each loss bravely and with as much good humor as possible.
We will miss him.
Sadly, Donna

The exit says much about a life....
With this in mind, I was blessed with Lou's last four years. Lou's life was centered around live well, laugh often, and love much. This he did. Lou hated this disease, it made him a captive in his own body. His mind was always sharp and he remained the Lou people knew and loved. I said to him once, you never complain. He simply said no. He was surrounded with people all the time, many sought him out for his wit and intelligence. Others for help on statistics. He always loved teaching others wherever he was. I will laugh often when I think of Lou. I will love much when I consider the gift of time Lou spent sharing thoughts with me. Lou loved his family, friends, and all the students he taught. I thank the Lord for this man who taught me a lot about life....
I should tell you Lou addressed his disease with a never quit attitude, always seeking to overcome it. He pushed himself to achieve many activities others would not have started. He did not quit, God had another plan for him.

Lou was a longtime member of the Faculty Senate Steering Committee at UMass Dartmouth. I have never known anyone who worked so hard for justice for his students and his colleagues. He was fearless and sadly was treated cruelly by the administration who had neither justice nor education as a priority.
His classes were aleays over enrolled - high praise for courses in statistics! He was always dewcribed as making his subject alive and interesting. In addition he was always available for fellow faculty members providing help on varied manuscripts. i think it is fair to say that several would nit habe gotten their PH.D.s eithout his help.
For me, I will miss my friend and remember his passion and wit.

My students (Medical Laboratory Science) took Lou's Statistics course for years at UMass. Their success while at UMass as well as in many medical science careers is testimony to what a gifted teacher he was. I appreciated his courage against injustice and irrationality, what a rare combination.

To any friends or family that are caring for Louis, my heartfelt condolences. Louis and Sharon were our best friends for years up here in Canada. He loved my husband Cedric and told many of his experiences with us in Canada to his many students. Louis is the third of our circle of four and I will miss him too. Love you Dr. Lou, and say hi to the others when you get there.
