Obituary of George M. Solan

George M. Solan, M.D. George M. Solan, M.D., passed away on February 27, 2016, at the age of 89 at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, Hudson, OH. He was the son of Olga Miley Chipley, of Moorefield, WV, and Eugene C. Solan, of Fredericksburg, VA. He was a high school graduate of Augusta Military Academy of Fort Defiance, VA, before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. George was enrolled in the V-12 program at the University of Richmond to become an officer. He left that program because he felt the war would be over before he could participate. He entered Submarine School at New London, Conn., and became a Seaman 1st Class. He was stationed in the Philippines of the Pacific Theater. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and entered American University in Washington, DC, where he met and married Marjorie A. Sonnemann of Chevy Chase, MD. Upon graduation he enrolled in the West Virginia School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV, with a wife and newborn son, Stuart. A second son, George M. Solan, Jr., had been born before he finished his second year of medical school. The last two years of medicine were at Medical College of Virginia (now part of Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Va. An internship at Ohio Valley General Hospital, in Wheeling, WV, was completed in 1955. George practiced medicine at Miner’s Memorial Hospital in Man, WV, and later became a coal company doctor for Boone County Coal Corp. in Sharples, WV. In 1959 he moved to Romney, WV, where he was a family practitioner for ten years. In 1969, the family moved to Stow, OH, so that George could take residency training in psychiatry. He was employed with the State of Ohio and worked at what is now Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, formerly known as Hawthornden, in Northfield, OH. He retired in 1991 only to return to employment with the state as an outpatient doctor. George decided he would make personal house calls on all patients in the program. In addition, he worked part-time for twenty-eight years as an independent contractor for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brecksville, finishing his career in medicine in 1998. His two favorite places of work were the Miner’s Memorial Hospital and the VA Hospital in Brecksville. George’s leisure time was devoted to art and writing, particularly poetry. He was a member of the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center for many years, as well as the Stow Players, Hudson Genealogical Study Group, Submarine Veterans of WWII, and SAR (Sons of the American Revolution). Predeceased by his daughter, Jennifer, he is survived by his wife, Marjorie; sons Stuart M. Solan, M.D., (Carol) of Richmond, VA: and George M. Solan, Jr., (Deborah) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; grandchildren Christopher M. Solan and Melissa Solan, both of Richmond, VA, and Samantha Solan, of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; sister, Elizabeth Singleton (Earl) of Myrtle Beach, SC, and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will take place at the Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow, OH, on Saturday, March 5, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., followed by a Submarine Veterans of World War II Ceremony and a Memorial Service officiated by The Reverend Canon Leigh A.
